Basically, a baseball sim either charges you for every single season (but let's you see what's happening under the hood) or gives you a full-scale GM simulator that hides the on-field engine. That being said, never I have seen a game that combines the transparency of a Strat-o-matic or Diamond Mind with the moddability of an OoTP. And on the PC, I've played Out of the Park, Baseball Mogul, and many others. I've played tabletop sims since the 80's: Strat, APBA, History-Maker, and the list goes on. Also, the dice rolls are so much fun and add greatly to the emergent baseball narrative. I love Digital Diamond's simple and transparent (but highly realistic) engine that allows me to see whether or not my decisions are having an actual impact on the game.

While, I enjoyed it, especially during it's Season Ticket years, it never had the amazing on-the-field engine that Digital Diamond has. I've also played Out of the Park since it's birth. I love the game now as it is but I am going to bet that in a few years, DDBB will be among the best three baseball sims and that's saying a LOT because the competition is stiff in this rather niche market!

And the best part? You don' have to pay for seasons!! I have sunk hundreds of dollars in Action PC Baseball buying seasons and while I don't regret it, Action PC may have to rethink its marketing strategy because games like DDBB and OOTP to name a couple either come with all seasons included or are free to create or download. DDBB really has a lot more to offer than you might think. It's obvious from the titles I mentioned that I am a baseball only fan and every sim I play has its own quirks and uniqueness. I have delayed part two of the guide while Mark implemented the defensive ratings. There's a LOT more going on under the hood with DDBB and it keeps geting better.

The next part will delve deeper into tactics and strategies as well as an extensive customization tutorial on how to use real player photos, parks, and logos as well as creating seasons. Part one is done and covers the basics as baseball is becoming more popular outside of America. I am writing a multipart guide for the game. The community is great and Mark - the developer - is very attentive to the community and it's quite clear that he has invested his whole heart and soul into this gem. The 19th edition is absolutely amazing but, again, OOTP have had 19 years to get it where it is!ĭigital Diamond on the other hand is a newcomer to the fray and honestly, it is far better developed at this early stage than OOTP was at a similar stage. In fact, you had to download the Lahman database on your own then create seasons. The first few iterations were not ambitious at all. I have played every iteration of OOTP since the very first on released in 1999. Someone commented that DDBB is a "much less ambitous game" than OOTP. I play a LOT of baseball sims including but not limited to: APBA Baseball for Windows, Action PC Baseball, Diamond Mind Baseball, Stratomatic PC Baseball, OOTP, Strategy-Baseball, Old Time Baseball, Diamond Mind Baseball, Digital Diamond Baseball and many more. I am a baseball junkie both real life and virtual/digital.
